TRAVEL TO BARCELONAAir
Barcelona's airport
is a modern-looking architecture made of glass, steel and marble.
The El Prat de Llobregat (BCN) is serviced by both
international and domestic flights. It is located 14 km south of
Barcelona and about 20 minutes away from the city center. There is
hardly a direct flight to Barcelona from the United States as almost
all of the flights arrive via a stopover in Madrid or other major
European points such as Paris, London, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam.
However, Delta does offer a nonstop flight to Barcelona from New
York City and Atlanta. Flights from the United Kingdom and other
European countries are frequent. The nationally-owned carrier
Iberia also provides puente aereo or shuttle services
between the Marajas International Airport in Madrid and Terminal C
of Barcelona's airport from around 7 am to 11 pm with planes depart
hourly. Tickets can be purchased from the airport counter upon
arriving, so reservation is not necessary.
Train
For train schedule
or online train booking, check out RENFE's website at
http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/ingles.html. There are frequent
overnight trains to Barcelona from many leading cities of Europe
such as Geneva, Zurich, Milan and Paris. All of them pull into
three Barcelona terminals. Some famous pan-European services are
Eurostar (http://www.eurostar.com), Train Hotel Elipsos
(sometimes known as the Talgo Night -- http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/talgo/train_hotel_elipsos.htm),
and Rail Europe (http://www.raileurope.com).
Bus
Bus traveling is
the cheapest way to travel to Barcelona from other cities in
Europe. But it also takes the longest time and definitely not the
most comfortable one. There are two main bus stations in Barcelona:
Estacio de Sants (for long-distance and international routes)
and Estacio del Nord (for inter-Spain routes). Spain's major
national long-haul company is Enatcar. Eurolines operate
long-haul buses which depart from Victoria Station in London.
Another company that schedules buses from the Victoria Station is
Aerolíneas. The journey takes approximately 24 hours.
Car
If you're touring
the rest of Europe in a rented car, you might, for an added cost, be
allowed to drop off your vehicle in a major city such as Madrid or
Barcelona. Motor approaches to Spain are across France vie
expressways. The most popular border crossing is east of Biarritz.
To get to Barcelona from the north, take the A-7 or the E-9 to A-18;
from the Costa Brava, take the A-19 heading southwest; and from the
south, enter Barcelona on the A-16.
