TRAVEL AROUND
Metro
To get around
Barcelona, the Metro is no doubt the best option as it's modern and
well-laid to cover all parts of the city. No matter how far you
travel, you pay only the flat rate of 1 €. But if you're staying in
the city for a while, it's best to get a Targeta T10 which costs
only 6 € for 10 rides. The Barcelona's metro runs on five lines and
the hours of operation are Mon - Thurs from 5 am - 11 pm; Fri, Sat
and the day before a public holiday from 5 am - 2 am; Sunday 6 am -
midnight, and public holidays from 6 am - 11 pm.
Bus
Barcelona's buses
operate from 5.30 am - 11.30 pm daily. The fare starts at 1 €, but
you can also use a Targeta T1 for 10 rides which can be used on the
bus as well as the Metro. Route maps are displayed at bus stops,
and the bus routes are fairly easy to master since they are
color-coded according to their direction. The red buses are city
buses that always pull into one of the three central squares;
Catalunya, Universitat, or Urquinaona. The cross-city buses are
yellow; the green buses skirt outiside the city center on all the
peripheral routhes. The blue buses are the night buses which always
stop near or in Plaça Catalunya.
Between April and November,
there's also a tourist bus, the Bus Turistic (#100; daily 9 am - 7
pm; every 20 minutes), starting at Plaça
Catalunya and linking all the main sights and tourist
destinations, including the Sagrada Família,
Parc Güell and the Poble Espanyol.
Taxi
Black-and-yellow taxis (with a green rooftop light switched on when
available for hire) are inexpensive, plentiful and well worth using,
especially late at night. There's a minimum charge of 1.80 € and
after that it's around 0.70 per kilometre. Surcharges are applied
in the cases like extra-passengers, pick-up from a phone call,
pick-up at the airport, loading of luggage...etc. Make sure the
meter is running or visitors who do not speak Spanish may risk a
rip-off.
Car
You're not going to need a car to get around Barcelona, but you may
want to rent one if you plan to see anything else of the region -
though note that the coastal roads in summer are not at all
pleasant; stick to buses and trains if that's as far as you're
going.
