ATTRACTIONS:  PLAZAS & SQUARES

Ciutat Vella
The old town is an important district of Barcelona.  The maze of winding streets serve as nexuses that link the community of old houses together.  The old town has been recently given a renewed interest and economic revival by students, artists and foreigners who move to settle in the area and together help convert this district into an interesting and highly enjoyable area to visit.

Plaça Catalunya
Located between Eixample and Ciutat Vella or Old City, Plaça Catalunya is a gigantic square with its ground covering approximately 50000sq m.  The square is an attractive promenade surrounded by beautiful architectures that serve as headquarters of banks and other agencies.

La Rambla
La Rambla (sometimes pluralized as Las Ramblas) is refered to the five separate tree-lined streets which are strung end to end.  This area covers the numerous sightseeing attractions and is close to markets, restaurants, cafes, the opera house, and many other interesting establishments.  It is an important city landmark as well as a popular stomping ground for both visitors and locals.

Plaça Reial
A popular meeting point for young people on their way to and from the nearby clubs and bars, Plaça Reial is a square embellished with a splendid fountain and charming tree-shaped street-lamps designed by Gaudí during his pre-professional years.  The plaza is easy to reach as it's only off the Rambla and Carrer Ferran.

Barri de L'Eixample
The designer of the Barri de L'Eixample had envisioned a plan for the city's expansion with a grid structure of vertical and horizontal streets that formed several squares.  L'Eixample was built in 1860 and didn't finish until 1920 which coincided with the boom in Modernist architecture movement.  The square is replete with stylish bars, cafes and restaurants.

Gràcia
The Gràcia square is a place where both the intellectuals and the low-keys go and mingle.  This lovely meeting point was an upstart in the 1960s-70s when the radicals and the bohemians came to enliven the place and established its reputation.  There are numerous trendy bars and cafes surrounded by charming 19th-century architectures for visitors to hang around especially in the area of Plaça del Sol.

Barri Gòtic
This Gothic Quarter is one of the oldest districts in Barcelona, and no doubt one of the most outstanding as it was once the location of many important historic sites including the Roman Forum in the square of Sant Jaume and Palacio del Ayuntamiento (townhall) in Plaça Nova.  The residential district is a maze of narrow streets teeming with spectacular specimens of Gothic architecture.  In addition, this is a great district to hunt for classy boutiques, restaurants and tapas bars as well.
