Comprehensive Travel Information to Barcelona, Spain

HISTORY

The first record of settlement in Barcelona started with the Phoenicians around the 11th century B.C., and followed by the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Visigoths and the Muslims. By the time the French raided the peninsula, the Catalán culture had already been established. From the 12th - 15th century, Catalonia had maintained its own empire before gradually falling to the Castilian monarch. Aware of their own cultural heritage, the Cataláns had continuously refused to surrender their identity to the central authority. After the 1936 election, the leftist government had granted Catalonia an autonomy which was short-lived as the civil war ensued soon after and Franco ascended to the supreme ruling position. Although talks about reinstating independence was still discussed after the end of the Franco era, Barcelona has emerged into the limelight by playing host to the 1992 Olympics and has since come to be recognized as a glorious Spanish city in its own rights.
