GEOGRAPHY Barcelona is situated on Costa Dorada (the Golden Coast) in the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula with the water of the Balearic sea lapping at its shores in the east. It is the capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia (also known as Catalunya or Cataluņa). Blessed with fertile resources and a convenient access to both sea and mountains, its ideal location was brilliant as a host for the 1992 Olympics. Tibidabo in the north and Montjuīc in the west are the major hills of the city which constitute important landmarks as well as idyllic recreational areas. The city's climate is unmistakably Mediterranean due to its latitude and the proximity to the sea. The temperatures average around 21° - 25° C in spring and fall, whereas in summer the thermometer may register over 30° C. Winter is moderated by the sea so the temperature is pretty much in the pleasant 10° C+. Recommended Accommodations in Barcelona:
